Up to 8 dead in Charleston, South Carolina church shooting

Several people are dead after a man walked into a downtown Charleston church and began shooting Wednesday night, according to various media sources.

The incident happened just after 9 pm at the  Mother Emanuel AME Church  on Calhoun Street, WCBD-TV reported.

Eight people are assumed dead, WTAT Fox-TV in Charleston reported. The shooting happened just as church services were letting out Wednesday night.

There is a heavy police presence in the area of Calhoun and Elizabeth streets with about 30 emergency responders on the scene, WCBD reported. The FBI has also responded to the shooting.

WTAT-TV reported that the suspect is on the loose in the area.

The suspect is described as a white male, about 21 years old, slender/small build, wearing a grey sweat shirt, blue jeans with Timberland boots, WTAT also reported.

The coroner is also at the church, WCBD reported
