A bullet struck a church pastor in the back of his head Monday night during a fight involving several men on Waughtown Street, authorities said.
Winston-Salem police were called to the Checks Cashed store at 1021 Waughtown St. on a reported shooting about 8 p.m.
Several men between ages 17 and 20 had been fighting in its parking lot, and one person fired a gun, police said.
A bullet traveled from the parking lot, across Waughtown Street and went through a window at the New Story Church at 1024 Waughtown St., said Jeff Hoover, the church’s house manager.
The bullet then traveled through a bookcase and hit Stephen Wayne Smith, the church’s outreach pastor, in the back of the head, Hoover said. The bullet appeared to have grazed Smith, who was wearing headphones at the time, Hoover said.
“I heard the shot,” Hoover said. “I’m upset that something like that happened. It’s really tragic.”
Smith was not involved in the fight, police said.
